What is a tennis string — and what types are there?

A tennis string is what hits the ball — and the part of the racket that affects your playing experience the most. The two main types are monofilament polyester strings and multifilament strings with a softer core construction. Which string suits you best depends on three things: your playing style, your racket, and how often you play. If you hit with a lot of topspin and want maximum ball rotation, a shaped polyester string with a slippery surface is the right choice. If you want more control and predictability, a round, stable polyester at a slightly higher tension works better. If you have sensitive arms or play infrequently — choose a soft construction or hybrid.

4-sided string — what do shaped profiles mean?

A 4-sided string is a string with a square profile. The edges bite into the ball's felt surface during topspin and snap back quickly as the string returns to its position — so-called snap-back. The result is significantly more spin and a sharper, more predictable ball trajectory than from a round string.
